Gordon Eliot Barter Jr., known affectionately as Bart, passed away on September 15, 2024, at the age of 90, in Green Valley/Tucson, Arizona. Born on July 29, 1934 in Broadway, Virginia, Bart was a cherished figure in his community and family.
Bart dedicated many years to the United States Air Force, retiring as a Master Sergeant in 1974. His commitment to service was deep-rooted and reflected in his lifelong values of duty and honor.
Bart was deeply loved for his selflessness and his unwavering commitment to his family. He was known for his exceptional sense of humor, which brought joy and laughter to those around him, the cute hat he always wore and his beautiful blue eyes. His battle with several cancers demonstrated his remarkable strength and resilience, surviving for five years against the odds.
He is survived by his daughter, Christine Barter-Fields; son-in-law, Scott Fields; granddaughters, Michelle Lynch and Stephanie Barter; grandson, Nathaniel Fields; grandson-in-law, Anthony Lynch; great-granddaughter, Kathlyn Lynch, and sister, Judy Cannon-Motley.
Bart was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rosa P. Barter, endearingly called Rosie; his daughter, Janet Barter; both parents, Myrtle and Gordon Barter Sr.; his sisters, Caroline Brown and Joan Reinhold, and brother, Richard Barter.
A graveside service will be held at Abingdon Episcopal Church, Gloucester, on October 25, 2024 at 11 a.m., where he will be laid to rest next to his beloved Rosie and daughter Janet. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
