A two-vehicle crash shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday resulted in the death of a 39-year-old Gloucester woman, according to Corinne Geller of the Virginia State Police.
A 1997 Acura was headed northbound on Route 17 in the vicinity of the T.C. Walker Road intersection when it ran off the left side of the highway and entered the median, Geller said. The Acura began to overturn and continued into the southbound travel lane where it struck a 2021 Ford EcoSport. The impact of the crash caused the Acura to land on its roof.
The driver of the Acura, Amber L. Velez, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene, the VSP reported. A 7-year-old male passenger was flown to CHKD in Norfolk for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The accident resulted in a disruption in traffic patterns for several hours, VDOT reported, with the northbound lane of Route 17 reduced to a single lane and the southbound lanes closed, with detours set up using Burleigh, Belroi and Hickory Fork roads.
The crash remains under investigation, the Virginia State Police stated. This was the third traffic fatality on Gloucester roads in 2024.
