Gloucester County Public Schools recently completed its 2010 United Way Campaign, with employees contributing $8,832 for charitable causes, according to coordinator Craig Smith.

Smith said that, although United Way giving was down about a third this year, he and division superintendent Ben Kiser were very pleased with the total because $7,109, or over 80 percent, of the contributions will aid charitable agencies in the Gloucester-Mathews area. The 2009 campaign raised over $12,000.

Of the 2010 donations, designations totaling $100 or more went to the following agencies: GCPS Educational Foundation, $3,030; Community Care (United Way), $1,089; Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue, $820; Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society, $649; The Samaritan Group, $465; Gloucester Boys and Girls Club, $405; Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue, $355.
