Gloucester man dies of injuries from May 30 crash

A 92-year-old Gloucester County man died last week as a result of injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash that occurred on May 30 at the intersection of Route 17 and Crewe Road at Gloucester Point, according to the Virginia State Police.

William R. Reid suffered serious injuries and was transported to a hospital in Newport News after the accident. He succumbed to his injuries on Monday, June 3, the VSP reported.

The accident took place around 2:20 p.m. on Thursday, May 30. A 2013 BMW 328Xi was heading southbound on Route 17 when it was unable to avoid a 1992 Jeep Cherokee driven by Reid, who was attempting a U-turn at a flashing yellow light at the intersection. The impact caused the Cherokee to overturn and go off the road into a ditch. The driver of the BMW suffered minor injuries, the VSP reported.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts, and the crash remains under investigation, the state police stated.
This was the second fatality on Gloucester County roads in 2024.
