The Gloucester Unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula, Hayes Shopping Center, is holding an open house on March 17 from 5-7 p.m. in an effort to increase membership and allow the community to learn more about the nonprofit program that provides after school child care for families.
“We’re basically available from 3-7 p.m.,” said unit director James Luck.
The club currently has students from Abingdon, Botetourt and Achilles elementary schools, as well as Page Middle School, take the bus to the club in the afternoons. “We are trying to add more schools, too,” said Luck.
To utilize its services, the club only requires a yearly $25 membership fee for children ages six to 18. “We’re super cheap because we’re nonprofit,” he said
The Boys & Girls Club provides many programs for youth to participate in after school, including sports and recreation; science, technology, engineering and math (STEM); and health and wellness.
“We have our arts program, too,” said Luck.
