Gladys Marie Johnson, a lifelong Gloucester resident, departed this life on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital.
She was born on August 24, 1941, to the late Benjamin and Dorothy Thompkins. She was a 1959 graduate of Thomas Hunter High School. She was a lifelong member of Wayland Baptist Church where she served diligently as a Deaconess.
Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Ira Luther Johnson Jr. She is survived by her children: a son, Ira Johnson III, and two daughters, the Rev. Angela Johnson and Darlene Thornton of Gloucester; grandchildren, Candace Johnson and Christopher Johnson; great-grandchildren, Sheloir Johnson, Christopher Johnson Jr., and Zaire Johnson; one sister, Lois Smith; one brother-in-law, Bennie Johnson, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
A funeral will be held at 12 p.m. on Saturday, August 24, at Wayland Baptist Church, 215 Ridgefield Road, Mathews, Va.
A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. until the hour of service. The Rev. Kevin M. Smith will be officiating.
