The Gloucester High School varsity softball and baseball teams celebrated double wins in the Class 4 Region A final last week, but both teams ended their seasons Tuesday night in their respective state quarterfinal games, which Gloucester hosted.

The Lady Dukes defeated Smithfield, 13-1, last Thursday at Stoney Run Athletic Complex, Newport News, securing the region championship for softball for the first time in GHS history, according to coach Red Lindsay.
Autumn Cookson (15-0) picked up the win by striking out seven batters, yielding five hits and scoring one run. The Lady Dukes celebrated 13 hits, five of which went for extra base hits. All nine starters had at least one hit. Senior Kaia Hutton earned her 100th career RBI during the region final.
Gloucester ended its season in the state quarterfinal game against Hanover, 4-0, Tuesday evening. The Lady Dukes were able to hold Hanover in the first inning, but Cookson gave up four hits and three runs in the second inning.
