The Gloucester High School varsity softball team will advance to the Class 4 Region A finals today after its win against Warhill, 2-1, in Tuesday’s regional semifinal game.
Alivia Bruce hit a two-out, two-run walk-off single during the seventh inning, leading Gloucester to its win. Pitcher Autumn Cookson (14-0) gave up five hits and one run, while striking out eight.
During the seventh inning the Lady Dukes were down, 1-0. Samantha Carlton led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second base on a Lilly Hogan sacrifice bunt, and to third on a ground out.
With two outs, Hannah Horsley walked and promptly stole second base. Bruce’s hit scored Carlton and Horsley to end the game.
Gloucester managed only seven hits during the game with six of them coming from freshmen. Bruce had three hits for four at-bats, while Cookson had two hits for three at-bats. Tessa Carteret added a hit, while senior Kaia Hutton also contributed a hit.
The Lady Dukes will face the Smithfield Packers at 5 p.m....
