GHS softball atop district standings

A 3-2 win over visiting Kecoughtan on Tuesday and a victory over Menchville Friday kept Gloucester High School varsity softball players at the top of Peninsula District standings. The Lady Dukes lead the district with a 12-1 record, followed by Warwick at 11-2. Menchville and Kecoughtan are close behind.

Makayla Jenkins (11-1) pitched a four-hitter to the Warriors Tuesday, giving up two runs, and blasted a solo home run in the fourth inning.

The Dukes took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Devon Smith hit a long drive over the left fielder’s head for a triple. A misplayed relay throw allowed Smith to circle the bases.

The lead was short lived as Allyson Babibsack tripled in two runs to give Kecoughtan a 2-1 lead. Jenkins was able to strand the last runner at third as she recorded a strikeout and a groundout to Alissa Upton.
