GHS senior wins Peninsula Sports Club soccer MVP

Caroline Merchant, a rising senior at Gloucester High School, was selected as the Most Outstanding Player for Women’s Soccer for 2020-2021 by the Peninsula Sports Club. She was among the players honored during an Aug. 10 banquet at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton.
The Peninsula Sports Club provides support and scholarship opportunities to 25 public and private high schools throughout the Peninsula area.
As a junior, Merchant tallied 11 assists and 16 goals, including both of the Dukes goals in their 3-2 overtime playoff loss to Nansemond River, during the COVID-reduced eight-game season.
Merchant has been a starter for the GHS varsity soccer team for three years and was selected as a second team, all-conference midfielder her freshman year. Because of COVID-19, there was no soccer season her sophomore year and there were no all-conference or all-region selections awarded to any players this past school year.
