The Gloucester High School rowing team opened its 2014 season with eight of its nine boats placing first, second or third at the Eastern Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association’s Opener Regatta on Saturday at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens.
Chase Holland and Zack Moore combined for first place in the men’s double, winning by over a minute for the Dukes. Novices John Cooper and Brandon Mathews joined varsity teammates Aaron Parr, Justin Poole and coxswain Amber Sterling for second place in the second varsity four.
The GHS varsity four of Russell Simpson, Taylor Dough, Holland and Moore, with coxswain Rachel Ferreira, was third in its race. The men’s lightweight four came in fourth but the race gave GHS novice coxswain some varsity experience.
On the girls’ side, the GHS light four of Mackenzie Marbain, Casey Martin, Kassidy Brown, Maddy Hogge and coxswain Ashleigh Dough placed first by over 45 seconds. Marbain, Martin, Dough and Brown were the only quad entry at th...
