Gloucester High School varsity softball players ran their record to 13-0 overall and 1-0 in the PenSouth Conference with a 4-3 win over visiting Menchville on Tuesday.
Pitcher Morgan Haywood gave up six hits, two earned runs and one unearned run and walked two while marking her 13th win of the season. The sophomore left-hander stranded six runners in scoring position and gave up single runs in the each of the last three innings.
Macy Robbins started the Dukes’ scoring with a third-inning single before stealing second base. She then scored on a single from Kaleigh Arnett for a 1-0 lead. Arnett later scored when the Menchville catcher was called for blocking the plate without the ball to make it 2-0.
Gloucester added to the lead in the fourth when Alissa Upton singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Tori Brown, and scored on a single from Shelby Alto to move the advantage to 3-0.
