The Gloucester High School girls’ volleyball team won its home opener Monday against Menchville. After Gloucester lost the first match, 25-12, Colleen Lemay pulled out a big kill on the first serve in the second game to give the Lady Dukes a spark. They went on to take the next two games, 25-18 and 25-16.
The Monarchs returned in the fourth game and stacked up a 16-point lead before Sam Coates came up to serve for the Dukes and stayed there as Gloucester posted 12 straight points. Marina Paredes contributed four of her 13 digs for the night and Melisa Williamson added back-to-back kills to the rally but Menchville prevailed, 25-20.
Dezeray Spencer had an important block in the tie breaker which went point to point until Kelsee Oliver served up three aces to seal it for Gloucester, 15-11.
