Denbigh knocked the Gloucester High School varsity field hockey team out of first place in Peninsula District standings with a 2-1 overtime win on the Lady Dukes’ field on Oct. 13. The game marked the first time this season a PD team has scored on the previously undefeated Gloucester squad and advanced the Patriots’ unbeaten streak in the district.
Denbigh scored first in the match-up last week, but Emily Beamer tied it in the second half for the Dukes to send the game into overtime. Three minutes into the OT period, Gloucester keeper Heather Johnson was charged with stepping out of the circle to make a play on the ball. The Patriots took a successful penalty stroke for the 2-1 win.
Gloucester (13-1 overall) had a makeup match with Warwick slated for yesterday and the Dukes took on Grafton Tuesday in a non-district game. The Dukes could get a post-schedule rematch with the Patriots pending the outcome of a Denbigh versus Menchville contest. The PD Tournament is set to...
