GHS girls advance to state semifinals

The Gloucester High School varsity field hockey team shut out the visiting Atlee High School Raiders, 5-0, Tuesday night in the quarterfinals of the VHSL Class 4 State Tournament.
With the win, Gloucester will travel on Friday to Kellam High School in Virginia Beach to face the Courtland High School Cougars from Spotsylvania in the state semifinals, beginning at 10 a.m. The winner advances for a shot at the state championship at 4 p.m. Saturday, also at Kellam High.
In Tuesday’s game, Leigha Germain scored twice while Avery Watkins, Kaylee Hall and Chloe West all scored once. Watkins, Reese Miller, Kamryn McDonough, Mackenzi Reece, Ady Jeffery, Charlotte Houtz, Abby Junker, Peyton Sutton each record an assist.
According to GHS head coach Joe Dougherty, the Dukes completely controlled the game in possession time and had 27 shots of goal and had 29 penalty corners.
Regionals
The Dukes claimed the Region 4A Championship on Wednesday after taking down Jamestown, 7-0.
