The Gloucester High School field hockey team is in the midst of gearing for the 2023 season which kicks off in just a few days, on Aug. 22.
The team has seen a lot of success with its last two seasons ending in the state quarterfinals. Head coach Joe Dougherty said the squad is hoping to be the first team at GHS to make it to states three years in a row.
Dougherty said the team will have four new faces in the starting lineup to replace the four seniors who graduated last year. Those four new starters have yet to be named but will emerge as the season gets closer. He’s not concerned with the talent of his team after losing four players as he says this team is deeper talent-wise than last year’s. He said the real challenge will be to develop chemistry.
Developing team chemistry can happen in a number of ways, with the obvious being practice and playing time. Building chemistry for this year’s team really started last December following the team’s End of Year Banquet, said Dougherty. It w...
