The Gloucester High School varsity soccer teams are well into the playoffs following successful regular seasons.The Gloucester Dukes boys’ team starts its postseason with an exciting 4-3 victory over Woodside last Thursday, winning in dramatic fashion through penalty kicks.
After ending the first half trailing, 1-0, head coach Craig Raines said recent JV call-up Gavin Blanks put up Gloucester’s only score in regulation. The team was able to keep the game tied throughout the second half despite losing one of its captains, A.J. Goller, to a double yellow card ejection. The score was 1-1 heading into overtime.
Even playing a man down, the Dukes were able to force the game into penalty kicks after three periods of overtime. Goalkeeper Jesse Manheim blocked Woodside’s first attempt before giving up two goals. Gloucester captains Alex Hogge and Nick Lebel made their shots. The score was tied, 3-3, before Gloucester’s final kicker, Ian DoRego scored the winning goal.
