Guinea Heritage Association’s Fourth Fridays program continues this Friday, March 28, with a “Pictorial View of Guinea in the 1960s.”
The program will be held at Buck’s Store Museum, 8850 Guinea Road, beginning at 6 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.
This presentation, led by resident historian Hamilton Williams, will include stunning images taken by the late Mark Sutton. Through his photography, Sutton told the stories of the hard-working Guinea watermen and their families, children and homes, a release stated.
Sutton came to the Guinea area in the early 1960s as an ensign in the U.S. Navy stationed in Norfolk. He spent time at Bennie Belvin’s fish camp and was invited to stay in Mr. Belvin’s old brown farmhouse on the property.
While there, he assembled a large collection of more than 1,300 black and white photos featuring Guinea’s men, women and children involved in activities including mending nets, setting nets, fishing the nets, and much more.
