The Guinea Heritage Association will be holding its first-ever Burning of the Socks event on Friday night at Buck’s Store Museum, Bena, and the GHA will also announce a new program benefiting local watermen.
The event will be held from 5-7 p.m. and will include barbecue sliders, s’mores, contests, prizes and sock burning. Burning of the Socks is a maritime tradition that involves burning winter socks around the March equinox to cast off the cold weather and welcome the start of spring and boating season, a release from GHA said. This tradition originated in Annapolis, Maryland, in the 1970s with Bob Turner, a boatyard worker and sailing enthusiast. After a harsh winter, Turner decided to burn his old, dirty socks and invited friends and co-workers to join, celebrating with food and drink. The tradition has since spread to other waterfront towns.
Everyone is welcome to attend this GHA event, with or without socks.
