George Lee (Dickie) Burroughs III, born on January 24, 1956, went to be with his Lord on October 20, 2023. Dickie was a 1974 graduate of Mathews High School. In 1979, he graduated from the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School as an outside machinist. In 1984, he went to work for Amoco at the oil refinery in Yorktown. He retired as Fire Chief and Head of Security for Western Oil Refinery in 2010.
Outside of work, Dickie was an honorary member of the Mathews Volunteer Fire Department and was also a member of Central United Methodist Church.
Dickie was known to all for his love of family and friends. His kindness and friendly personality always made you feel welcomed and loved. He had a passion for classic cars and boating. He took great pride in showing his 1965 and 1967 Chevelles. After his retirement, many memories and trips were made boating with the BYC.
Dickie was preceded in death by his son, Brandon; parents, Sarah and Dick Burroughs, and brothers, Wade, Gerald, and Dalton Hudgins.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Roberta; like a daughter, Ashley McBurney and her husband Chris; along with their daughters, Layla, Hannah and Emma, and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at Central United Methodist Church. Burial followed at Friendship Cemetery. The family asks that remembrances and donations be made to the Mathews Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 1130, Mathews, Va. 23109 and Central United Methodist Church, P.O Box 297, Mathews, Va. 23109. Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster-Faulkner Chapel assisted the family.
