George Hardin “Hardy” Homich, 80, of Mathews, Virginia, passed away at his home on Wednesday, January 17, 2024. Born in Tuscaloosa, Ala., to George E. Homich and Sara Hardin Homich, he spent his childhood as the son of a U.S.A.F. pilot, living in many places including Eagle Pass, Texas, Neubiberg, Germany, Oxford, Miss., and Cheyenne, Wyo.
He earned a BA degree in accounting at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Miss., and a master’s degree in logistics at the Air Force Institute of Technology in Dayton, Ohio. As a U.S.A.F. officer, he served two tours at the Pentagon, as well as assignments that took him from Oklahoma City, Okla., to Taipei, Taiwan. After 22 years of service, he retired in 1988 after achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
A lover of all things living and growing in nature, he enjoyed tending to his lawn, vacationing in the Outer Banks, spoiling his cairn terriers Bob and Odie, sailing, fly fishing, and wonderful travels around the country in his Airstream trailer.
He is survived by his wife, Karla; daughter, Lauren Giddings and her husband Kenny of Gloucester, Va.; son, George Hardin Homich Jr, of Mathews, Va.; sister, Sally Wells and her husband Collis of Oxford, Miss.; niece, Ashley Kizler and her husband Stanley Szczelaszczyk; grandnephew, Stasu Szczelaszczyk of Chicago, Ill., and five grandchildren, Emily Nichols, Kenneth Giddings, Shelby Giddings, Hannah Rose Denton, and Alexander Giddings, all of whom he was so very proud.
A memorial and entombment service with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
