GCPS earns Purple Star designation

“We’re a military family community.”
Dr. Anthony Vladu, superintendent of schools, announced that Gloucester County Public Schools is now one of six school districts in the commonwealth to receive the Virginia Purple Star Award, a recognition earned for being a welcoming and supportive environment for military children, at Tuesday night’s school board meeting, held in the T.C. Walker Education Center auditorium.
Page Middle School became the last school in the division to earn the Purple Star designation in October. Achilles Elementary and Gloucester High schools were the first two Purple Star schools in the district, having received the distinction in 2018.
“Yesterday was a great day of learning,” said Vladu.
On Monday, GCPS honored Veterans Day by holding breakfasts, assemblies and parades. Children were able to invite their own family members who have served in the military to be honored at school.
Veterans provide a great example of “service, sacrifice and humility,” said Vladu.
