Gail Ann Harley, 79, of Mathews, Virgina, passed away at Mary Washington Hospital on Friday, March 1, 2024 with her family by her side.
She is survived by her loving husband, James Harley; two daughters, Lora Farney and Donna Ledbetter; two sons, Luther Harley and Benjamin “Ben” Harley, and five grandchildren, Shannon Polivka, Clayton Harley, Bruce Martin, Chase Harley, and Elizabeth Harley, and six great-grandchildren, Corbin Polivka, Emma Polivka, Dawson Martin, Grant Harley, Evelyn Ledbetter, Viana Ledbetter. She was preceded in death by her stepson, James “Jim boy” Harley, and stepdaughter, Anna Harley. Gail was a Stafford County School bus driver from 1976-1996. She moved to Mathews and worked as the postmaster at Mathews County post office for several years before retiring.
There is something about losing a mother that is permanent and inexpressible—a wound that will never heal. I truly never learned what the words ‘I miss you’ were until I reached for my mom’s hand, and it wasn’t there.
Her wishes are to be taken home to Mathews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to the Susan G. Komen Foundation or the SPCA of choice.
