The Gwynn’s Island Civic League Foundation awarded its first scholarship since organizing in January. Mathews High School 2022 graduate Cameron Stearns, center, received a check for $1,000 last week, which he said he would immediately deposit into his account at George Mason University, where he’ll be majoring in mechanical engineering this fall. League member Bill Burdette, shown handing the check to Stearns, said the rising college freshman’s credentials were outstanding. He graduated seventh in his class, with a 4.09 GPA.
