G.I. Festival returns this weekend

The annual Gwynn’s Island Festival, celebrating “The Road to Paradise,” will be held this weekend, rain or shine, at the Gwynn’s Island Civic League building, 1996 Old Ferry Road, Grimstead.
The fun kicks off Friday with the annual Chicken Dinner. The drive-thru starts at 4:30 p.m., while the eat-in will be held from 5-7 p.m. The cost is $14. It’s an evening of “neighbors and friends sharing good food and laughter,” said festival organizer Jan Bassett.
Saturday is the big day, when arts and crafts vendors, musicians, food vendors, and others will be on hand at the Civic League from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to give festival-goers a taste of the Gwynn’s Island “paradise.”
“Everyone dreams of paradise, and many consider Gwynn’s Island their paradise,” said Bassett.
The Gwynn’s Island Festival has been celebrating this paradise for approximately 75 years, said Bassett, since the first Homecoming or Festival was held to welcome men home from World War II.
