Friday a busy night for local firefighters

Members of the Gloucester and Abingdon fire and rescue squads had a busy Friday night with a huge influx of emergency calls. Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad received 18 calls for emergency medical services within a nine-hour period, while Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue received 10 calls, between both fire and rescue.

GVFRS took on multiple EMS service calls. Its on-duty crews and volunteers responded to 17 of those calls and lent AVFR a helping hand by providing mutual aid to one. At least four of those 18 calls occurred at almost exactly the same time.
“We are very fortunate we got all of the calls covered expeditiously,” said GVRS Chief J.D. Clements. “The crewmen did a wonderful job and worked hard to make sure that everyone got the service that they needed.”
GVFRS averages about 10 to 11 calls per day and they responded to almost double that number on Friday.
