Free class helps people protect themselves from scams

A free class to prepare people how to watch out for identity theft and other scams will be held by the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office from 10-11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at the sheriff’s office, 159 Goodwin Neck Road, Yorktown.
The class will break down the do’s and don’ts, and what to do if you fall victim to a scam. The class is open to everyone from throughout the area.
“We have had an increase in calls for service for people who are reporting a scam or reporting being scammed,” said sheriff’s office public information officer Shelley Ward. The class time was purposely set so that elderly adults can attend.
