The Four Chaplains service was held on Saturday at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Gloucester. The service was sponsored by American Legion Post #75 Gloucester, American Legion Post #83 Mathews, DAV Chapter #58 Gloucester, Marine Corps League Middle Peninsula Detachment #1317, and VFW Post #8252 Gloucester. This service marked the 81st anniversary of the heroic actions of the four chaplains aboard the USAT Dorchester, which was sunk by a German U-boat in the North Atlantic on Feb. 3, 1943. Of the 902 men aboard, 672 died. The four chaplains—Alexander D. Goode, George L. Fox, Clark V. Poling and John P. Washington—sacrificed their lives, giving up their life preservers, to save others.
