A large crowd showed up at Machicomoco State Park in Hayes on Monday morning to take part in the First Day Hike, getting a little exercise and a chance to get an early jump on a New Year resolution. Ranger Melissa Hecker, above at left, spoke to the crowd about the history both of the site and the park itself before she led the group onto the park’s trail. Before the walk, participants enjoyed cookies and hot cider. Afterwards, they were able to select a painted rock with an inspirational word or saying to carry with them into the new year.
