A massive fire destroyed a home in the 8700 block of Glass Road in Hayes in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Jan. 22.
Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue responded shortly after 1 a.m. with two engines and a tanker to the blaze, which was initially called in as a chimney fire. The York County Department of Fire and Life Safety responded mutual aid with a tanker. A total of 25 people were on scene between all of the agencies.
Only one woman was at home at the time of the fire and was able to get out on her own.
AVFR Training Captain Drew Luellen said that when first responders arrived, there was fire coming out of two sides of the house and it quickly spread across the entire house.
It took about six hours to put out the fire of the approximately 2,000-square-foot home. Around 20,000 gallons of water was used to put the fire out. Runs were made from the home to Auto Max when more water was needed, because that was the closest fire hydrant.
