A spark caused by a malfunction in a ceiling heater in one of the classrooms at Abingdon Elementary School on Wednesday morning caused a disruption in students’ daily lessons, but little more.
Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue was initially dispatched to the school at 8:48 a.m., with a line officer arriving on scene four minutes later, according to AVFR Training Captain Drew Luellen.
Three engines, a quint fire truck and two medic units responded to the call, along with 13 firefighters from both Abingdon and Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue squads.
When firefighters arrived on scene, the spark was already out. The fire alarm had to be reset prior to letting everyone back into the building. No one was hurt and there was only cosmetic damage as a result of the spark.
