Few surprises, low turnout in Tuesday’s primary

Virginia’s double primary presidential election, held on Tuesday, yielded few surprises. Those voting in the Republican race largely supported former president Donald Trump, giving him 63.31 percent of the vote, while those voting Democratic largely supported current president Joe Biden with 88.69 percent of the vote.
Republican candidate Nikki Haley drew over a third of the state’s primary Republican vote, or 34.65 percent, but she announced on Wednesday morning that she was suspending her candidacy, setting up what appears to be a Trump-Biden rematch for the fall.
Few voters actually turned out for the election. Out of 5,436,641 active Virginia voters, only about 19 percent voted. Roughly 12.6 percent (687,158) of those voted in the Republican primary, while around 6.35 percent (345,564) voted in the Democratic primary.
Voters who participated, either on Tuesday or voting early, had the option of participating in either party’s primary.
