Dozens of people who attended Mathews Market Days were a bit richer when they left there Saturday.

According to Mathews Treasurer Wendy Stewart, Virginia’s Unclaimed Property Division, which had a booth at the festival, found $35,116.51 in unclaimed cash for 179 Virginia residents, plus 398 shares of stock of unknown value.

One man discovered $7,000 in cash that he didn’t know he had, while another was owed over $2,000, said Stewart. She said that one out of seven Virginia residents has unclaimed property, so the short time it takes to check with the state could be time well spent.
