Ewell strikes out 13 as MHS shuts out Lancaster, 6-0

The Mathews High School varsity baseball team picked up a shutout victory over Lancaster and suffered a 6-2 loss to Tidewater District foe West Point in recent action.

On Friday, Mathews hosted its final game with Northern Neck District opponents, facing the Lancaster Red Devils for the third time this season.

Mathews knocked off the Red Devils by a 6-0 margin to complete a season sweep. Ryan Ewell took the hill for Mathews. He got the win, striking out 13 batters. Josh Wilson, Paul Burnette, Chase Buchanan and William Scott Smith contributed base hits with Austin Kemp adding two singles.

With nothing left but the Tidewater District, Mathews traveled to West Point on Tuesday for the second Tidewater matchup of the season. The Devils jumped on top early by scoring in the first inning. The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning, when West Point got on the board with five runs. The Pointers maintained that lead to take a 6-2 victory.
