Evelyn Dale Handley, age 74, passed away on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, in Salem, Va. Born on September 2, 1950, Dale was a cherished member of the community and a loving figure in the lives of her family and friends. Dale graduated from Gloucester High School and went on to establish a fulfilling career, dedicating many years of service to Jim Walter Homes, QFS, and Orvis. Her work ethic and dedication were evident to all who worked alongside her. She was a woman of many passions, including sewing, crocheting, gardening, and canning. Dale found joy in the simple pleasures of life, whether it was watching the Hallmark Channel or enjoying a glass of White Zinfandel. Her love for shopping online was unmatched, especially finding the best deals for Christmas gifts on Temu and Amazon. She also shared a special bond with her cat, “Wrekket,” often amused by his playful antics. Dale was incredibly proud of her family, often sharing stories and achievements of her grandchildren and her nephew’s children. She is survived by her sisters, Gale Crane (Wayne) and Marcia Haywood (Phillip); her children, Doug Newman III (Celeste), Corey Newman (Tracy), and Kindal Fitzgerald (Paul); her aunt, Shirley Lewis; nephews, Casey Crane (Lara), Denny Crane (Keri), Jamie Crane (Amanda), and Phil Haywood (Dee); as well as 14 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her beloved cat, “Wrekket,” and many cousins. Dale was preceded in death by her father, Tom Handley; mother, Jennie Handley; aunt, Teen West, and uncle, Sonnie Seawell. Dale’s life was one of vibrant engagement, marked by her love for her family, her community, and the simple joys that filled her days. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew her. The family would like to thank Heartland Hospice, especially Wendy and Kierra for their tender loving care. The family will receive friends at Hogg Funeral Home on Friday, November 1, 2024, from 6-7:30 p.m. The graveside service, conducted by the Rev. Sven vanBaars, will be held at Abingdon Episcopal Church Cemetery on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at 12 p.m.
