Ted Engquist, 52, of Gloucester, has announced his candidacy in the November election for the Abingdon District seat on the Gloucester County School Board.
Engquist said he decided to run because the current school board is not getting a lot accomplished and he would like to bring conservative values back to Gloucester.
If elected, Engquist would like to improve testing, saying that Gloucester County Public Schools has lower test scores compared to the rest of the state. He would also like to keep and retain teachers who are knowledgeable in their fields of study.
Engquist also wishes to focus on school safety and anti-bullying.
“I will work hard to ensure that the children are safe,” he said
After earning his high school diploma, Engquist began working in the construction industry and said he has too many professional certifications to name.
