Starting late Monday, all traffic on Route 30/33 will be intermittently stopped overnight for bridge maintenance on the Eltham Bridge crossing the Pawmunkey River between the Town of West Point and New Kent County. Traffic will be stopped for a minimum of four 15-minute intervals between 9 p.m. Monday and 5 a.m. Tuesday. Traffic will be cleared between each full traffic stop. If work cannot be completed on those days, the intermittent traffic stops will be rescheduled to occur between 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, and 5 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18. The Virginia Department of Transportation continues work to install a new gutter system on the movable portion of the bridge. Full traffic stops are needed as work progresses on this maintenance project. Crews are sequencing three separate projects with a total cost of $5.6 million to maintain the condition of the movable bridge and travel surface.
