Elizabeth Clopton Brown, 95, of Gloucester, died on Oct. 14, 2014.
She was born Oct. 24, 1918, at Clopton, Gloucester County. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Raymond Sidney Brown, M.D., who was a Gloucester County physician for 50 years; her daughter, Elizabeth Randolph Brown; her son, Raymond Sidney Brown Jr.; her parents, Thomas Cecil and Elizabeth Hogg Clopton, and her sister, Cecilia Clopton Snider.
She is survived by two daughters, T. Robins Brown (Kieran Quinn) of Nyack, N.Y., and Cecilia Clopton Brown of Gloucester; five grandchildren, E. Lee Taylor (Thomas) of Saluda, Raye Dunn (Michael) of Chandler, N.C., William Sebren (Kisa) of Kinsale, Thaddeus Quinn of Bellingham, Wash., and Ted Quinn (Laurie) of Cinnaminson, N.J., and seven great-grandchildren.
She and her husband both graduated from Botetourt High School in 1935. She graduated from Mary Washington College in 1939. They married before he entered Medical College of Virginia (MCV). While at MCV, she worked at the Richmond Army Air Base as secretary to the commanding officer and later headed the finance department.
She served as president to the Dame’s Club, a social club for wives of the medical students and interns.
Active in many organizations, these include the Garden Club of Gloucester as a past president, American Daffodil Society, life member of APVA, Gloucester Woman’s Club, charter member of Ware River Yacht Club. She was the first recipient of the Medical Society of Alliance historical award named in her honor for her work at the Walter Reed Birthplace for over five decades.
A dedicated horticulturist specializing in growing, showing daffodils, and winning awards—locally, statewide and nationally, she was one of the first daffodil judges in Tidewater Virginia.
She was a member of the Garden Club of Virginia. She received the horticulture award twice, 1972 and 2005.
She rooted plants and shrubs as her mother taught her and enjoyed sharing ‘her friendship plants’ with others.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 1, 2014 at Ware Episcopal Church Cemetery, Gloucester.
