Edwards announces intention to run for sheriff

April Edwards, 44, of Dutton, has announced her candidacy as an independent running for the position of Mathews County Sheriff in the Nov. 7 election.
If elected, Edwards said she intends to continue the same quality of public service and level of safety that Sheriff Mark Barrick has provided in the community during his three terms in office. Last month, Barrack announced that he does not intend to seek a fourth term.
“It is imperative in a small community that fair and equitable treatment is provided to all citizens,” said Edwards in a press release.
A primary goal Edwards has is continuing drug enforcement efforts, especially pursuing cases involving the opiates and methamphetamines that are plaguing the area. She said she also wants to ensure that all officers receive extensive training to better equip them to work in any position in the office.
