Editorial: Waterfront news

These long days bring the height of the season where people enjoy the water, either on land or at sea.Three bits of waterfront news in Mathews County can have a big effect on that enjoyment.

The bad news: Milford Haven Coast Guard Station is now operating as a “Scheduled Mission Station” with reduced crews working scheduled shifts. That means, according to the Coast Guard, the crews are no longer available on a 24-hour rotation to conduct search and rescue missions.This decrease in personnel and operating hours is said to be temporary, and the Coast Guard cited service-wide workforce shortages. We hope that recruitment will improve and Milford Haven returns to its full-time capacity. We note, however, that in 2021 a scheduled seasonal shutdown was reversed due to protest. Boaters must stay tuned in.
