Editorial: Tradition

After all the months of sound and fury, you know the end of the campaign season is near when you find yourself drawing up the Gazette-Journal’s traditional charts: How Gloucester Voted, and How Mathews Voted.
We have been presenting these charts to our readers after elections for many years. They are informative in the moment, although complete returns are now easily found on websites as well. They are also valuable records, and as we are a newspaper of record for this region, we take seriously our role in preserving the information.
Just for fun, and to exhibit the depth of this tradition, we show below information from the voting charts of 1960 … the year that John F. Kennedy edged out Richard Nixon for the presidency. The more things change, the more they remain the same.
