In the eternal search for new energy sources, things are starting to happen in eastern Virginia.
The Virginia Marine Resources Commission has approved the construction of a 479-foot-tall, five-megawatt wind turbine generator prototype in the lower Chesapeake Bay, three miles off the Eastern Shore town of Cape Charles. This in-the-bay windmill is a project of Gamesa Energy USA and Huntington Ingalls Newport News Shipbuilding. If it proves efficient, expect to see many, many more.
In addition, the Obama administration has decided to proceed with seismic study of energy resources off Virginia’s coast. This probe has met with enthusiastic endorsement of state officials and candidates.
Also, Dominion Virginia Power is moving forward with plans to construct solar generation facilities and arranging to purchase solar power from customer-owned installations. A State Corporation Commission hearing on the matter will be held in the fall.
