A new craze is sweeping the area this summer, and we couldn’t be happier.
The rock craze has gotten youngsters (and not-quite-youngsters, too) off the couch, away from the TV and video games and either tapping their energies by creating one-of-a-kind rock art, hunting down clues to find hidden rocks, or thinking up unique places to hide their own creations.
Facebook pages offering clues for painted rock hunters have cropped up in Gloucester, Mathews and elsewhere. We’re not sure who thought up the idea, but it was inspired. It has brought families together in an activity that encourages creativity and the fun of the hunt.
We at the Gazette-Journal have also done our part, with some painted rocks strategically placed around town with stickers on the back that give the lucky rock holder a prize.
In this long, hot summer, the rock craze is a welcome diversion. Just remember to stay hydrated and watch out for traffic. Other than that … Have fun!
