Editorial: Roller-coaster season

It’s almost here.
Five short weeks from tomorrow—Friday, Sept. 20—Virginians will start to cast their votes in the 2024 presidential election. It’s certainly been a roller-coaster season, especially in the past few weeks.
Beginning June 27, Americans have witnessed: 1. A debate that sparked concerns among Democratic supporters about the age of the incumbent president. 2. An assassination attempt on the life of Donald Trump, followed two days later by 3. The announcement of Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance as Trump’s running mate. 4. The withdrawal of incumbent President Joe Biden from the 2024 election, throwing his support behind his Vice President Kamala Harris. 5. Democrats quickly coalesce behind Harris, followed by 6. A virtual roll call of pledged delegates to make the choice of Harris official and, the next day, 7. Harris names Minnesota Gov. Timothy Walz as her running mate.
