Editorial: Please. Don’t Drink and Drive

A number of businesses are repeating the Don’t Drink and Drive message on Page 5A of this week’s paper. Ahead of the New Year’s Eve parties, the message bears repeating. We thank those businesses for their civic concern.
By the numbers:
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that in December 2020, there were 937 lives lost, nationwide, in drunk-driving crashes.
NHTSA said that every year shows an increase in drunk-driving accidents during the holidays, casting a cloud of bleak darkness over families and friends associated with those lost and injured.
No merriment is worth the risk.
NHTSA reminds us to plan ahead; to designate a sober driver, to call on family and friends, or hire a cab.
If you know someone who has been drinking, please, do not let that person get behind the wheel. Find another safe way for that person to get home.
