Editorial: Fraud is everywhere; consumer, beware

Most of us have received those text messages (lying text messages) that inform us we are behind paying our tolls.
Some people will fall for that. We are sure the E-Z Pass people are having to spend lots of time explaining that it’s a scam, with criminals trying to get people’s personal information for criminal purposes.
And we are sadly sure that some people are paying these fake bills and losing control of their hard-earned good credit.
“The DMV will never send you text messages about toll bills,” said DMV Commissioner Gerald Lackey. “We urge our customers to be vigilant and avoid sending your personal information via text.”
This is just one of the current criminal scams circulating in our area.
Medicare has also sent a warning about scams.
Like DMV, it warns: never send personal information over a text. Don’t send your Medicare number. Check your Medicare summary notices to be sure all the charges are legit. “Guard your Medicare card like it’s a credit card,” the agency said.
