Editorial: Four words

Here are four words we never, in our wildest dreams, expected to hear, or to experience as a fact:
Subdividing Mathews Court Green.
However, a subdivision is exactly what will occur if the Mathews County Board of Supervisors decides to follow through a proposal to give the Confederate monument on the historic green, and the land under it, to a private organization.
A public hearing on this proposition is scheduled for Tuesday. It comes on the heels of a hearing held in September on the concept of giving public land to a private entity. While the specific transfer of property was not then under consideration, participants understood the hearing to be something of a finger in the wind of public opinion.
By our review of letters and reports from that hearing, roughly two dozen people and one organization expressed opposition and 15 people plus one organization were for the idea.
