Editorial: Either/or?

Everyone has seen memes like these shared on social media:
“Our troops deserve a raise a lot more than college students deserve loan forgiveness.”
“Homeless servicemen should come before any refugee.”
While attempting to lift up one group (in both cases cited above, America’s military and its veterans), they simultaneously seek to denigrate another (college students and refugees, in the two examples).
Why pit one group against the other? Why is it always presented as an either/or proposition? America is a rich and powerful country; surely we can provide for our veterans, support our college students, and properly and humanely deal with those who seek refuge within our borders.
