Editorial: Community support

The future looks bright for this year’s crop of high school graduates, thanks to the overwhelming support of civic groups, businesses and local folks who have stepped up to help with the costs of post-secondary education—to the tune of more than $2 million from all sources.
This year, Mathews High School graduates received about $375,000 in scholarships, with more than $100,000 of that amount coming from local groups and individuals. Gloucester High School seniors earned a whopping $1.6 million in scholarships.
Year after year, the generosity of this community amazes us. Civic organizations hold fundraisers throughout the year to raise the money for the scholarships they provide. Businesses also do their share. Individual legacies provide more.
Everyone who presents a scholarship is showing faith in the future. Last week, we congratulated the local graduates. This week, we commend the members of our community who extend a helping hand to those furthering their education.
