Dukes shut out Phoebus in soccer debut

The Gloucester High School varsity boys opened the 2014 season with a 5-0 win over former Peninsula District opponent Phoebus on Friday. The Dukes came out aggressively and made quick work of the Phantoms in the non-conference match up.
Chris Bendit opened scoring early with an unassisted goal. Freshman Tanner Griffith added another with an assist from Maxx Polk and Polk scored just before the half with an assist from Nick Danaher for a 3-0 lead.
Andrew Mortensen got the job done in the second half with two headers in two minutes. The first was assisted by midfielder Austin Williams on a streaking run into the attacking half. 
The second was assisted by Clay Van Gieson and his beautifully lofted free kick from 50 yards out. The Phoebus keeper could only watch as Mortensen glided the header into the upper left corner of the net. 
On defense, Hargrave, Van Geison and Danaher had consistent performances and were vital in helping keeper Ryan Mahoney maintain a clean sheet. Mahone...
